Find the words for a conversation you’ve been putting off.
Checking in on a friend. Setting a boundary. Bringing up something difficult.
Practice it first with a fictional character who responds to your words, then get feedback and try another approach.
What would you like to practice?
Sometimes you know something needs to be said. You’re just not sure how to begin.
Choose a situation that feels familiar, or describe your own.
- Checking in with a friendThey’ve been distant lately. You want to ask how they’re doing without putting them under pressure.
- Talking with your partnerSomething’s been bothering you, but you don’t want the conversation to turn into an argument.
- Reaching out after a lossYou want to be there for someone, but you’re worried about saying the wrong thing.
- Raising a difficult concernYou’re worried about your brother’s drinking. How do you bring it up without sounding accusatory?
- Checking in at workA colleague seems overwhelmed. You want to show you care without overstepping.
- Setting a boundaryA friend relies on you late at night. You want to be supportive, but you need your own time, too.
And more situations involving family, parenting, stress and relationships.
How Weftwell works
A little practice can make a difficult conversation feel more manageable.
-
Tell us what’s on your mind
Choose a situation or describe one in your own words. A few details help Weftwell make the practice relevant to you.
-
Have the conversation
Speak or type your replies. A fictional character, powered by AI, responds to what you say so you can work through the exchange.
-
Get feedback you can use
See what came through in your response, which conversation skills you used, and one thing you might try differently.
-
Keep practicing
Build your skills through short lessons, quick exercises and longer conversations. Practice at your own pace, whenever you have a few minutes.
Your situation. Your words.
Practice the conversation that’s actually on your mind.
You don’t have to fit your problem into someone else’s script.
Tell Weftwell who you’re speaking with, what you want to say and what makes the conversation difficult. It uses those details to shape your practice.
- Choose the level of challenge Start with a gentler exchange or practice with someone who is harder to reach.
- Keep personal details private You can describe a relationship without sharing anyone’s real name.
- Try another approach Didn’t like how you handled a moment? Go back and see how a different response changes the exchange.
What’s the conversation about?
What you need to say
I want to ask my friend why she keeps canceling, without pushing her.
What you worry they’ll say Optional
That she’s fine, and then she changes the subject.

Meet Remy
Your guide to getting started.
Remy helps you learn one conversation skill at a time.
If you’re unsure where to begin, tell Remy what’s on your mind. It can help you find a lesson or practice that fits.
- A short lessonLearn one useful idea in about a minute.
- A quick practiceTry a response in about two minutes.
- A full conversationPut it together in a longer exchange.
Feedback that helps you improve
See what you said. Understand what you could try next.
Knowing what to say doesn’t always mean it’s easy to say it.
Weftwell looks at your replies through five conversation skills. It highlights words that worked well, explains why they may help, and offers a practical suggestion for next time.
Maya · Part 1 of 4 · Your own words
You named what Maya was feeling.
What worked
You named what Maya was feeling before trying to fix anything.
Try this next
Ask one open question, then let the silence sit. Maya decides how much to share.
Try that reply againYou’ll practice how to:
- Listen before offering solutions.
- Ask questions that help someone open up.
- Acknowledge what someone is feeling.
- Raise concerns calmly and directly.
- Work towards a next step together.
As you practice, you can see which approaches you’re using more often and which ones you’d like to work on.
Your progress reflects what you’ve practiced in Weftwell. It’s a guide for learning, not a prediction of how someone will respond in real life.
One conversation. Two ways to respond.
You’ve told Zoe that you can’t keep answering her messages late at night.
She replies:
Response A
“No, I’m sorry. Forget I said anything. Message whenever you need to.”
This may ease the tension for now, but it takes back the boundary you were trying to set.
Response B
“I know that hurts to hear. I care about you, and I do want to talk. I just can’t keep replying overnight. Could we find another time?”
This acknowledges how Zoe feels while staying clear about what you can offer.
That’s what you practice in Weftwell: finding words that feel right to you, and understanding what they communicate.
Why Weftwell?

Who’s behind Weftwell?
Built with clinical psychology expertise.
Weftwell was founded by Dr. Alvin K. Tay, a clinical psychologist and adjunct professor at Teachers College, Columbia University.
The app draws on an approach familiar from skills training: learn through examples, practice in realistic situations, receive specific feedback and try again.
Weftwell is designed to make structured conversation practice more accessible to everyday users.
Our team is also studying AI-supported practice in professional mental health training. That research is ongoing and separate from the consumer app.
